Red Orchid
The work
The story revolves around a man, his orchid collection and a strange intruder. Best described as a drama comedy this was my foray into film having previously directed animation. The subject of orchids appealed to me as the plants evoke beauty, mystery while embodying natures wonder. The 7 minute film was entered into a number of film festivals including Tropfest.
conclusion
The whole experience was a big learning curve. For the first time I had to hire a camera, work with a cast and crew, secure locations and then prey that everyone turned up on the day. The shoot lasted 2 days and went well. The editing process lasted a week, compressing the film down to 7 minutes while keeping my creative vision was the most challenging aspect for me during this phase. The film was accepted into the Tasmanian film festival and I was able to travel to Launceston to see my film in competition. It was a big eye opener seeing my film screened next to other excellent short films as it made the strengths and weaknesses of my own film all the more apparent. I also spent 2 days hanging out with other film makers from all around Australia who were happy to give me feedback. Being immersed in this creative environment was a brilliant experience and a great way to learn about film.
